Christmas Traditions Explained for ESL Class

Christmas is one of the most important holidays in the English speaking world. There are many Christmas traditions in these countries. The traditions are both religious and secular in nature. Here is a short guide to the most common Christmas traditions. What Does the Word Christmas Mean? The word Christmas is taken from Christs Mass or, in the original Latin, Cristes maesse. Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus on this day. Is Christmas Only a Religious Holiday? Certainly, for practicing Christians around the world, Christmas is one the most important holiday of the year. However, in modern times, traditional Christmas festivities have become much less related to the Christ story. Examples of these other traditions include Santa Claus, Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer, and others. Why Is Christmas so Important? There are two reasons: 1. There are approximately 1.8 billion Christians in a total world population of 5.5 billion, making it the largest religion worldwide. 2. And, some think more importantly, Christmas is the most important shopping event of the year. It is claimed that up to 70 percent of many merchants annual revenue is made during the Christmas season. It is interesting to note that this emphasis on spending is relatively modern. Christmas was a relatively quiet holiday in the USA until the 1860s. Why Do People Give Gifts on Christmas Day? This tradition most probably is based on the story of the three wise men (the Magi) giving gifts of gold, incense, and myrrh following the birth of Jesus. However, it is important to note that gift giving has only become popular in the last 100 years as figures such as Santa Claus have come to be more important, and emphasis has been shifted to giving gifts to children. Why Is There a Christmas Tree? This tradition was begun in Germany. German immigrants moving to England and the USA brought this popular tradition with them and it has since become a much-loved tradition for all. Where Does the Nativity Scene Come From? The Nativity Scene is accredited to Saint Francis of Assissi in order to teach people about the Christmas story. Nativity Scenes are popular around the world, especially in Naples, Italy that is famous for its beautiful Nativity Scenes. Is Santa Claus Really St. Nicholas? Modern day Santa Claus has very little to do with St. Nicholas, though there are certainly similarities in the style of dressing. Today, Santa Claus is all about the presents, whereas St. Nicholas was a Catholic saint. Apparently, the story Twas the Night before Christmas  has a lot to do with changing St. Nick into modern day Santa Claus. The Journal Article Elementary School Youth Essay

Introduction The journal article Pathways To Aggression In Urban Elementary School Youth, studies and investigates the violence that is profound in the urban school district. The authors researched and examined the students to see if the violence from their environment was the cause of the children’s violence in school. Two hundred and fifty nine students were examined with the permission of parents to come to a conclusion. Nearly one hundred percent of the participants were exposed to at least one act of violence. Results showed that because of the violence that the students were around is what cause them to have posttraumatic stress disorder and attitudes towards violence. Problem and Purpose The problem that urban students are facing is the attitudes they have towards violence and the aggressive behavior that they have when they are in school. The purpose of the study is to examine the children and their behaviors to see where the problem is coming for and, is it the leading factor in why the children suffer posttraumatic stress disorder. The researchers are trying to test their hypothesis of; if the youth have a negative range of exposure to violence then they will develop posttraumatic stress disorder, aggressive behavior, and attitudes towards violence. The smart phones are considered as the core business of Samsung and this slump dragged the total profit of the company by 30% to their lowest level in the next two years (Manorek, 2016). This phone was introduced with the thought that it will compete with apples iPhone7 but instead it had done huge loss to the brand image. Research Methodology In this research, qualitative data will be used which will help to find out the impact of the Samsung customers prior to and after the launch of Note 7. The study will be conducted in a descriptive framework (Koro-Ljungberg, 2015). Both primary and secondary data will be collected in this study. Primary data will be collected through the help of a questionnaire. The questionnaire will be distributed in online as well as physical form (Kondoy, 2014). The customers who visit the Samsung stores will be surveyed through the physical distribution of these forms. For online distribution, the questionnaires will be sent to the e-mails of the customers as well as the social media sites of Samsung (Gray, 2013). The forms will be distributed by convenient non-probability random sampling through which the respondents can choose the targeted customers on a random basis. The survey is not biased and it is not restricted to any particular gender or age group (Page, 2013). The data analysis will be conducted by using statistical tools like SPSS. It will help to find the correlation between the dependent and independent variables, which in this case are customer satisfaction, Samsung note 7 and the safety of the customers (Corbin, Strauss Strauss, 2014). The correlation conducted through regression and Pearson correlation should help to meet the desired research objectives (Al-Harrasi Al-Badi 2014). Following an ethical approach to a study is essential in ensuring its reliability and validity. This research work will be based on an ethical approach. It will be ensured that the participants are not coerced to give up information (Yin, 2013).
